Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible to apply for a rain barrel?
Only SAWS residential water customers are eligible. SAWS will provide a lifetime maximum of two coupons for rain barrels per SAWS residental account, whether distribution coupon code or retail paper coupon. However, you may always purchase additional rain barrels at the participating vendor.

  • What's the difference between the distribution and retail options?
    • Distribution Event
If approved, you will receive an electronic coupon code in an email to purchase one rain barrel. The code does not guarantee or reserve a barrel for you. You must use the code to purchase the rain barrel online from the rain barrel manufacturer included in your email. After you complete your online purchase, you will be mailed a pickup voucher (usually one week before your selected event). You will need to bring this with you to claim your rain barrel at one of the two distribution events.
    • Retail Store
If approved, you will receive a paper coupon in the mail to purchase up to two rain barrels at a participating Stone & Soil Depot location during regular business hours.
  • Does the rain barrel paper coupon expire?
The retail coupon is good for 30 days from the date of issue. Once it expires, you must re-apply.
  • Is there a limit on rain barrels?
There is a lifetime maximum of two coupons per SAWS residential account. You are free to purchase more barrels at the regular retail price.
  • Can I get two rain barrels at a distribution event?
No, you may only pick up one rain barrel at an event. Please apply for a retail coupon if you would like to purchase a second rain barrel.
  • If I’m unable to pick-up my barrel at the distribution event, can someone else pick it up for me?
Yes, as long as the individual picking up the barrel has the pickup voucher that was mailed to you. Also, the pickup voucher must be signed by you (the purchaser).
  • If I’m unable to pick up my barrel on my selected distribution day, may I pick it up on another day with the pickup voucher?
No, your barrel will only be available on the date you selected.
  • Will SAWS deliver the rain barrel to me?
No, you must pick up your rain barrel.
  • I have a small car. Will the rain barrel fit?
The Rain Water Solutions rain barrel will easily fit into the back seat of a mid-size car. Please remove all items from the back seat prior to arrival at the pickup event (including car seats, boxes, bags, etc.).
  • Is it hard to install?
Please watch the Rain Water Solutions installation video before you apply and purchase. This will help you decides if this is difficult for you.
  • Can I run an in-ground sprinkler system or a hose-end sprinkler from my barrel?
No, rain barrels don’t contain enough water nor do they provide the necessary pressure.
  • If I get two barrels, can I connect them?
Yes, Rain Water Solutions barrels are designed to connect together with the included hose and connecting equipment.

  • Will the rain barrels attract mosquitos?
Every precaution should be made to prevent mosquito infestations. The screen is designed to stop most adult mosquito infestations, but eggs could travel in stagnant gutter water or through damaged screens.

There are three options to help prevent mosquito larvae from developing in the barrel: Add 1 cup of bleach per 12 gallons of water; 2 cups of apple cider vinegar per one gallon of water; or one or two “donuts” of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti).
