Checking for Leaks

To check for leaks, turn off all indoor and outdoor faucets, and then look at your water meter. If the fine flow indicator (usually a small triangle or diamond on the face of the meter) is turning, you have got a leak. Watch your meter for five or ten minutes to see if the fine flow indicator moves. If it continues to move, then a leak exists on your property and needs to be located.

Check Your Toilets
Add a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the water in the tank, but don't flush. If coloring appears in the bowl within a few minutes, your toilet is leaking. If so, all it usually needs is a new toilet flapper, an easy and inexpensive repair job. San Antonio's hard water along with toilet cleaners, corrode soft rubber flappers, so they usually need to be replaced annually. Jiggle the handle. It might be the chain. You may need to adjust it. Adjust the "adjustment screw" on the float to stop water from going into the overflow tube. Check all waterline connections.

Check For Underground Leaks
Walk around your property and check for the following: green patchy areas, moist areas, or saturated areas on the ground. It is essential to check your sprinkler valves, heads and main line.

Check Your Water Heater
Look for standing water around your water heater.

Check For Broken Pipes
You will need to check the following areas for broken pipes: ceiling, between walls, and around your slab. Always remember that if your walls, floor, or ceiling have stains, mildew, or moisture, you may have a water leak.

Check Your Faucets
When you learn to repair your own faucets, drips can be repaired promptly. It is easy, costs very little, and can give you substantial savings in plumbing and water bills.

Check Your Valves
Check the following valves for leaks: cut off valves, sprinkler valves, and valves under sinks.

Check Your Water Softener
Make sure that your water softener is working correctly. You may need to refer to your owner’s manual or contact someone to verify if your softener needs to be serviced.

Check Your Icemaker
Check to see if your icemaker is dripping or look for water stains on the floor. Also, make sure that your icemaker is connected properly.

What To Do If You Find A Leak
San Antonio Water System is responsible for maintaining the water line from the main to your water meter. You are responsible for repairs to any part of the water system from the meter towards your home. If you find a leak please have it repaired and send a copy of the receipts and a completed High Bill Inquiry Customer Response Form to the San Antonio Water System. We may be able to reduce your water bill!

Note: It is important to check for leaks even if the signs are not obvious. Immediate action should be taken to repair all leaks. If leaks are not repaired immediately, it will result in a high bill and may disqualify you from receiving an adjustment.
