Water is one of the few elements that universally touches all our lives. Consequently, we
are the stewards of what is arguably San Antonio’s most precious natural resource, and
the very lifeblood of this community.
And our commitment here – to this community – runs as deep as water itself.
Through our Community Outreach Division, for instance, we involve a cross-section of
our ratepayers who serve on various advisory committees. They are the community’s voice,
representing fellow ratepayers and constituents on critical water issues such as capital
improvements, conservation, and water resources.
Additionally, our outreach efforts have established strong community ties with more than
100 neighborhood/homeowner associations. Whether it’s hosting neighborhood meetings
on water and wastewater construction projects or organizing and hosting tours of key
infrastructure sites, SAWS takes a proactive role in keeping our customers informed and
involved in how we serve San Antonio.
And there’s so much more that we proudly do in serving this community, such as:
- Youth Education – Our award-winning H2O University programs keep
growing in popularity. In 2004, our combined educational initiatives reached more
than 125,000 elementary and high school students, teachers and parents through
special events, tailored curricula, newsletters and workshops.
- Mentoring Partnerships – SAWS launched successful mentoring alliances
with the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the Northside Independent
School District’s Science and Engineering Academy, and the Communities in
Schools Upward Bound Program.
- Conservation – Hailed as one of the best water conservation programs in the
country, SAWS Conservation makes it easy for our ratepayers to save both water and
money. For instance, during the Season to Save Community Challenge program
more than 4,000 free low-flow toilets were distributed. This win-win project
helped raise funds for 84 non-profit organizations while providing a potential water
savings of 44 million gallons per year.
-
Combined Charity Campaign – SAWS employees have consistently
responded to the call of helping those in the community who are less fortunate. In
2004 we raised more than $100,000 for area charities, with employee participation
climbing to 55%.
