Mayor Julián Castro

Julián Castro was elected Mayor of San Antonio on May 9, 2009. When elected at the age of 34, Castro became the youngest mayor of a major American city.

Castro also became the youngest elected city councilman in San Antonio history when he was elected in 2001 at the age of 26. Engaged in public service and committed to building a flourishing community, he has championed a vision of economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for all San Antonians. He also seeks to create better educational opportunities, promoting a bold, collaborative and generational effort from citizens.

Castro, a San Antonio native, is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University with honors and distinction in 1997, and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2000.

The mayor manages a civil litigation practice and has served on the Board of Urban Ministries, Family Services Association and the Clear Channel San Antonio Advisory Board. In addition to community service, he has taught courses at St. Mary's University, Trinity University and The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Castro's brother, Joaquin, serves in the Texas House of Representatives.

He is married to Erica Lira Castro, a schoolteacher. They have a daughter, Carina Victoria Castro.
