Conservation Plant List

Winter: Mid-November to Mid-February

Tender perennials turn brown after the first hard freeze that often coincides with Thanksgiving season. The plants that remain green are now appreciated in a new way.  Cactus, liriope, rosemary, yaupon and other plants stand out as the "stars" of the winter season because other plants won't return until warmer weather does.

Backbone Plants
Does your landscape look bare during the winter? It could be that you relied too heavily on suummer perennials that are now dormant. Consider adding a few "backbone" plants that will look very much the same year-round.
Herbs: Artemisa, Santolina, Pink Skullcap, Rosemary, Lambsear
Shurbs: Mountain Laurel, Nandina, Evergreen Sumac, Holly
Plants That Rarely Freeze: Liriope, Autumn Sage, Mexican Oregano, Iris (foliage), Asiatic Jasmine, Yucca
