First you'll need to know how much water
your sprinkler system emits. The free SIP kit contains everything
you need to get started:
- Four sprinkler cups
- Rain gauge
- Log sheet to record your watering amounts
If you water your lawn using an automatic
sprinkler system, place the four sprinkler cups randomly in
your lawn, near your sprinkler heads, then do one of the following:
Set your sprinkler timer for 15 minutes then turn your sprinkler
on. Record the amount of water in each sprinkler cup and average
the results. This will help you determine how long you will need
to run your sprinkler system to deliver a specified amount of water.
(Example: If it takes 15 minutes to fill each sprinkler cup to the
1/4" mark, you can estimate your sprinkler system will need
to remain on for 45 minutes to reach the 3/4" mark.)
or
Set your sprinkler timer for one hour then turn your sprinkler
on. Record the amount of water in each sprinkler cup and average
the results. (Example: If it takes 1 hour to fill each cup to the
1 1/2" mark, you can estimate your sprinkler system will need
to remain on for only 30 minutes to reach the 3/4" mark.)
Please note that every sprinkler system is different due to design,
age and water pressure. It will help to occasionally check your
system for accuracy. If you would like to schedule an irrigation
check-up to determine your sprinkler system's accuracy, contact
SAWS at (210) 704-SAVE.
Use the rain gauge to measure any rainfall and keep a log of the
amount of water that is collected after each rainfall event so you
won't have to water.
We've included a watering log for you to keep a weekly record of
the following:
- your weekly water amounts
- natural rainfall events
- changes in lawn grass appearance
- your water usage
If you water your lawn using a hose with
a wand or moveable sprinkler, please call Texas AgriLife Extension
Service at (210) 467-6575 for more information. |
