More Ways SAWS Can Help

Just a little SIP
The SAWS Seasonal Irrigation Program (SIP) provides you with lawn watering advice based on the needs of your landscape and current weather conditions. You can register online to receive a weekly e-mail or phone message with SIP advice personalized for your grass type, sun exposure and watering day. This weekly SIP advice is also printed every Saturday in the S.A. Life section of the San Antonio Express-News.

Annual Irrigation Check-Up
Have a free Irrigation Check-Up from SAWS annually. Irrigation systems need constant maintenance. Keep yours set to manual and use sparingly. Keep an eye on maintaining the system and learn how to use your controller. Call the Conservation Department at 704-SAVE for an appointment.

SAWS Northwest Conservation Site
6798 Culebra
522-9220

Your one-stop conservation center. Open from 9am – 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with special dates on the weekend – call the Garden Volunteers of South Texas for more information at 522-9220. Here you can pick up brochures and view a wildscape demonstration garden with over fifty species of watersaving plants. Mulch is available on a first come, first served basis. Bring your own equipment and containers and load it yourself.

Community Resources

The San Antonio Botanical Garden
555 Funston Place

City of San Antonio Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Center
7030 Culebra
207-6440
Residents should take their household hazardous waste to the City facility (7030 Culebra – 207-6440). Bring your City Public Service (CPS) bill showing the environ-mental fee for proof of residency. Open every Thursday – 10am to 7pm, Friday – 7am to 4pm and the first Saturday of each month – 8am to 1pm. Items accepted are used motor oil, batteries, brake fluid, antifreeze, up to six tires, herbicides, pesticides, rat poison, household cleaners, pool chemicals, paint, paint thinners and strippers, aerosol cans and solvents (construction material, tires, or items from businesses are not accepted). For more information visit their Web site. These items should not be thrown in the trash or drained into the street as they can pollute creeks, streams and groundwater.

Gardening & Landscaping Resources
Your local bookstore will have a wide variety of reference books on watersaving landscape techniques. Look for books written especially for Texas. Key words to look for are perennials, xeriscapes, native Texas plants, organic gardening and landscape design. Web sites that carry advice specific to Texas are also helpful.
