Kick the Can: Toilet Rebate Program

Get rid of your old throne and save a king's ransom in money and water.

With the SAWS Kick the Can Program, getting rid of your old water-wasting toilet saves you water and money.

Free Water-efficient Toilet
Through the Kick the Can program, SAWS will give you up to two new water-efficient toilets absolutely free. And it's so simple - SAWS has already found high-quality water saving toilets for you. And did we mention they're free?

Who's eligible?
  • SAWS customers who have water-wasting toilets in their residence and the residence was built prior to 1992.
  • SAWS residential customers with one or more rental properties built prior to 1992. Renters must complete a Landlord Consent form.

Who is not eligible?

  • SAWS commercial customers. Commercial customers should apply for rebates through the SAWS Commercial Retrofit Programs. For further information call 704-SAVE.
  • Customers receiving only sewer service from SAWS.
  • New bathroom additions built after 1992.
  • SAWS residential customers replacing an existing 1.6 gallon water-efficient toilet with a new water-efficient toilet.
  • SAWS records all toilet retrofits by address. If the records show that the maximum number of toilets have been replaced at a given address, no further rebate will be provided. SAWS prequalifies each applicant through its RetroFit records and the Bexar Appraisal District for the number of bathrooms in a residence.

Flapper Hint
Flappers should be changed at least once a year (along with your smoke alarm batteries). It is important to get the right flapper for your specific model of toilet. If you settle for a one-size-fits-all flapper, you’re likely to use more water with each flush. For more information on what flapper you need, click here.
Replacing the Flapper
  1. Shut off water supply to toilet.
  2. Remove old flapper. Attach new flapper to the mounting arms.
  3. Fasten chain onto lift arm with enclosed hook. There should be minimal slack in the closed position.
  4. Turn on water supply.

NOTE: The top edge of the flush valve outlet should be smooth and free of pits and calcium deposits as this serves as the sealing surface.
