Wildscaping: Landscaping for Wildlife

This class is intended to get you prepared for planning and planting your garden this spring. It is an introductory class on how to landscape to attract wildlife to your property. Learn how wildlife view your backyard as potential habitat and which plants offer food and shelter, as well as how to incorporate these plants and water features into your design. As a homeowner, you can make a big difference on your small urban lot that can benefit wildlife, add to the beauty of your yard and also create a positive effect on our evironment. A short hike will be offered through the Garden to view bed shapes and design. Fee: $20.

Designing Herbal Landscapes

Learn how to blend useful herbs into your landscape as well as the roles different herbs play and how to select the right herbs for specific spaces. Cost is $41 (includes Garden admission) plus a $5 supply fee for materials, herbal snacks, a drink and recipes.

Learning from Historic Texas Landscape Designs with Mike Pecen

Program will explore the idea of creating contemporary, conservation-conscious landscapes guided by the lessons and successes of the past. After a brief survey of historic regional landscapes and styles, discussion will include heritage plants and their uses in landscape design, as well as invasive plants introduced by our ancestors. The class will be held both indoors and outdoors. Mike Pecen is a San Antonio landscape designer whose projects have earned LEED designation and an Austin Business Journal Going Green Award. He designed the rehabilitation plan for the National Trust's Villa Finale house museum in San Antonio, and he is at work on other historic sites in the region.
Program fee: $10 for MLAC members; $15 for non-members. Space is limited; RSVP is required.

Take a stroll through WaterSaver Lane, a cluster of miniature cottages with colorful diminutive gardens whose blooms belie their thrifty ways with water. Each tiny cottage is a different architectural style, complemented by its own front yard of attractive water-saving plants. WaterSaver Lane is designed to inspire homeowners to create beautiful landscapes that conserve water. Guided tours of Watersaver Lane are offered on the first Friday of every month at 10 a.m. and on the third Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. Participants receive a free copy of SAWS' San Antonio Landscape Care Guide.

Come help us prepare our native-plant gardens for the spring. Some simple garden maintenance will provide habitat for butterflies and other wildlife. You will learn about our great plants and what you can do at your home. No experience is necessary. Gardening Volunteers of South Texas and San Antonio Water System present Watersaver Landscape Design School. Featured speaker will be Brian Hough whose landscape designs have been featured on three Watersaver Landscape Tours and the Garden Conservancy Tour. You'll learn to visualize your yard in a new way—low-water, but high-impact with year-round color opportunities. Additional presentations include Tom Harris on drip irrigation and Mark Peterson of San Antonio Water System on SAWS' conservation rebate programs.
The event will be interactive, and there
will be opportunities for one-on-ones about individual
landscaping goals. Pre-registration is $25, or $40 per
household. Each individual or household will receive a
copy of the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association's The Best of Texas Landscape Guide, the Native and Adapted Texas Plant Guide, SAWS' San Antonio Landscape Care Guide and numerous other informational pieces.

Join us for this top 20 countdown to the most valuable native plants that will draw in birds to your backyard. Many of the plants highlighted are shrubs and trees that serve as valuable food sources, shelter and nesting opportunities. We will also offer up some basic ID tips to help you identify the birds you might see on your roperty. Birds are one of the easiest wildlife species to attract, so why not get started with a new and fun gardening project! Judit is a 23 year employee of Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. and has been an Urban Wildlife Biologist in San Antonio for the past 17 years. She, along with many others, initiated the first chapter of Master Naturalists in Texas in 1996 and she still serves as advisor to the founding Alamo Area Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist™ Volunteer Program.
