Field Investigations

This Field Investigation focuses on educating students on the historical importance and uses of water that have shaped the current water policies and politics in the San Antonio region. This trip lasts from 8:15 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.

Tentative Schedule
8:15 a.m. Students meet at SAWS Central Office-Customer Service Center
8:30 a.m. Buses depart
9:00 - 10:30 a.m.

Issue One: Storm Water Issues in San Antonio
Location: New Housing Development
     —  What is storm water?
     —  Water Quality Issues over the Recharge Zone
     —  Best Management Practices
     —  Inspection Exercise

10:35 - 12:00 p.m.

Issue Two: Flooding on the San Antonio River
Location: Olmos Dam and San Antonio Flood Control Tunnel
    —  Flood Control Engineering

12:30 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch (San Antonio Missions National Historical Park)
1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Issue Three: Water as a Historical Issue in San Antonio
Location: Mission San Jose
    — Historical Importance of Water
    — Historical Usage of Water
3:00 - 3:45 p.m. Espada Aqueduct and Acequias
    — Historical Water Engineering
4:15 p.m. Buses arrive at SAWS
