From Rain to Drain
Field Investigations

This Field Investigation focuses on teaching students the symbiotic relationship between water and humans: from the time it falls as precipitation, recharges an aquifer, is pumped from the aquifer and sent to a home, returns down the drain, sent to a SAWS Recycling Center, and finally back into the environment. This trip lasts from 8:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Tentative Schedule
8:45 a.m. Students meet at SAWS Central Office-Customer Service Center
9:00 - 9:30 a.m. Background: Edwards Aquifer 101- (Edwards Aquifer Authority)
     —  Edwards Aquifer Background
     —  Edwards Aquifer Measuring (J17 Well)
9:30 - 10:15 a.m. Background: The Workings of a Water System - (SAWS)
     —  Pumps and Pipes: Infrastructure 101
10:20 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Background: SAWS Main Control Center- (SAWS)
11:00 a.m. Buses depart SAWS
11:20 - 12:20 a.m.

Issue One: Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone (SAWS)
Location: Stone Oak Park
     —  Bear and Cub Cave
     —  Recharge and Flood Control
     —  Human Impact

12:30 - 1:00 p.m. Lunch (Stone Oak Park)
1:20 - 2:20 p.m.

Issue Two: Drinking Water
Location: SAWS Basin Pump Station
    — Drinking Water Production
    — Water Use and Costs

3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Issue Three: Treating our Wastewater
Location: SAWS Dos Rios Water Recycling Center
    — Water Down the Drain
    — Why Treat Wastewater
4:15 p.m. Buses arrive at SAWS
