Environmental Education and Awareness Mini-Grants
SAWS has awarded a total of $129,171.36
in mini-grants since 2002!

The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is pleased to offer a Mini-Grant Program for projects that educate PK through 12th grade students on topics of Water Quality, Water Conservation, Environmental Awareness and Pollution Prevention.

Any organization within the SAWS service area is welcome to apply for a mini-grant, however the primary objective must be to educate school age children on topics of Water Quality, Water Conservation, Environmental Awareness and Pollution Prevention.

PURPOSE
To assist area schools, neighborhood organizations, and other civic groups within the SAWS service area to educate PK through 12 grade children on topics of water quality, conservation, environmental awareness and pollution prevention.

Examples are: (i) a school-wide project promoting relevant water issues such as water conservation, water quality and pollution prevention, (ii) a Campus Water Audit, (iii) conducting a Water Conservation Awareness Week, and/or (iv) a field trip to a facility or activity recognized by the San Antonio Water System Mini-Grant Committee as educationally acceptable in the understanding of water issues (i.e., SAWS WaterFest, Botanical Gardens).

PLEASE NOTE - Mini-grant money can be used for educational project related field trip transportation costs. See the bottom of page two for more details.

REVIEW CRITERIA
The criteria listed below must be addressed in the application and will be used to assess proposals:

50% Applications must concern projects directed towards youth education – projects must be designed solely to educate PK though 12 grade children on topics of water quality, conservation, environmental awareness and pollution prevention.
20% Target audience – how the project will meet the needs of its targeted audience.
15% Matching funds – a minimum of 25% of total project funding must come in the form of matching funds or donated labor and materials. For these purposes, volunteer time is valued at $10.00 per hour.
10% Public participation, public access, and/or community involvement – the number of expected visitors or participants the program will affect and the duration of the project (i.e. the project shall be utilized annually, monthly).
5% Use of community resources – input from community resources knowledgeable in the activities or projects proposed for funding is usually free of charge and should be sought by applicants prior to submitting an application.
5% Transferability – the potential of the project to be duplicated in similar circumstances/locations.
5% Innovation – projects showing originality in concept or refinement of existing techniques or procedures to increase environmental awareness.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES:

  • Applications are accepted throughout the year.
    • The Grant Committee meets the last week of the month to review applications.
    • Grants are awarded for any dollar amount not to exceed Two Thousand Five Hundred and No/100 Dollars ($2,500.00) per applicant per calendar year.
    • A signed Letter of Understanding must be executed upon receipt of the grant.

  • Only complete applications will be considered.
    • Applicant must completely address each of the Review Criteria listed on the previous page.
    • A detailed line item budget must be included with the application explaining how the SAWS funds will be utilized during the project.
    • The duration of the project must be specified. (i.e. one day, one month, the school year).
    • If applicable, a maintenance schedule for the summer months must be included.
    • Applicants should attach additional information such as, but not limited to, lesson plans, educational expectations and results and usage schedule.

  • Project status and financial reporting requirements are noted in the Letter of Understanding .
    • A final project report, including a line item accounting supported by original receipts, is required upon completion for every approved project.
    • Programs one month and longer in duration are required to submit quarterly and final reports regarding project progress, completion and use of funds.
    • Final reports must include numbers that quantify program activities and success (i.e. organized three (3) environmental fairs, number of youth educated, etc.).

  • All expenditures must be supported with original receipts or invoices showing payment in full and must be submitted to the Communications and Community Outreach Department.
    • Applicant is required to contact SAWS if expenditures are anticipated to deviate from the approved budget.
    • In the event that a funded project is terminated, all funds not expended and all items purchased having a value over One Hundred and No/100 Dollars ($100.00) must be returned to SAWS.
    • ANY FUNDS NOT ACCOUNTED FOR WITH ORIGNAL RECEIPTS SHALL BE RETURNED TO SAWS WITH THE FINAL REPORT.

  • SAWS reserves the right to designate which items in a proposal that SAWS will fund.
    • Ineligible items may include, but are not limited to food, salaries and items that can be found at no cost from other sources.
    • Eligible items may include but are not limited to school bus transportation for project related field trip within Bexar or contiguous counties, equipment or tools, educational resource guides, water education curriculum, etc.
    • SAWS is in no way obligated to fund any application and reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to decline any application.
