SWAT: Student Water Action Team

Program Outline

The SWAT program uses a four-targeted approach to introduce students to the C.O.R.E values. They include:

  1. SWAT students will have the opportunity to participate in water related Field Investigations throughout the year.
  2. SWAT students will become actively involved in their community by completing a required “Problem Based Service-Learning Project” on any water-related topic and present their results at the end-of-the year public conference.
  3. SWAT students will have an opportunity to participate in classroom case study investigations all centered around water resource issues.
  4. SWAT students will be asked to pass-on their knowledge to others in the community.

SWAT Goals
The central goal of the SWAT program is to teach participating students the C.O.R.E values by:

  • Providing high school students and teachers background information about local, regional, and historical water issues through multiple field observations and hands-on investigations.
  • Offering SAWS staff as a resource to SWAT members and keeping them up-to-date on events and issues at SAWS.
  • Connecting SWAT members with community partners who are also involved with water resource issues.
  • Providing a service-learning opportunity that will motivate members on subjects such as the environment and their community.
  • Involving members in their community by requiring water based “Service Learning Projects”.
  • Increasing members’ self-confidence and professionalism through peer review during the SWAT Conference.
  • Transforming SWAT members from applied science to active citizenship.
