(5/1/09)

Taking place Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven homes in the Alamo Heights and Brook Hollow neighborhoods are featured, each a winner of this year's Watersaver Landscape Contest. The yards were judged on criteria such as low water usage; planning, design and color; low water use plant selection; appropriate use of turf; creative use of hardscape and low maintenance.
The four landscapes in Alamo Heights, all front yards, feature little or no grass, instead opting for culinary herbs, native wildflowers and native and adapted perennials and plants. In addition, three shaded backyards are showcased in the Brook Hollow subdivision, using interesting techniques such as a series of rain barrels and crushed granite pathways.
Addresses and directions to the homes on the tour are available at www.gardeningvolunteers.org/. Volunteer docents will be available at each house to answer questions during the tour. The annual contest and tour are sponsored by Edwards Aquifer Authority, CPS Energy, GVST, San Antonio Parks and Recreation/ Botanical Garden, San Antonio River Authority and San Antonio Water System.
