SAWS launches Conservation Makeover: Home Edition
(9/23/09)
SAWS this week launched Conservation Makeover in southwest San Antonio, partnering with San Antonio City Councilman David Medina, Jr., to retrofit approximately 100 homes throughout Council District 5. This fall, SAWS will retrofit a total of almost 300 homes through Conservation Makeover.
"I'm delighted that SAWS is making these home improvements available at no cost to the homeowner," said San Antonio City Councilman David Medina, Jr. "Programs like Conservation Makeover that save both water and money are even more critical this fall, as we work together through the drought as well as the tough economic conditions."
As part of Conservation Makeover, SAWS conducts a free assessment for qualified homeowners to identify water leaks and less water-friendly fixtures. SAWS then contracts with a licensed plumber to retrofit the homes, installing high efficiency fixtures, such as toilets, showerheads and faucet aerators, and repairing minor fresh water leaks for qualified homeowners. This free plumbing assessment and service has a value of $200 - $500, and can save homeowners money on their water bill each month.
"Conservation is the key to our community's water management strategy," said Karen Guz, SAWS conservation director. "Helping homeowners retrofit their homes with water-efficient fixtures saves millions of gallons of water each year for San Antonio, and saves our ratepayers hundreds of dollars on their bills: a win-win for the city."
Replacing an old water-wasting toilet with a new high efficiency model may save up to 12,500 gallons of water per year. In addition, installing water-saving showerheads and faucet aerators may conserve an additional 10,850 gallons annually. Any water savings achieved results in lower bills for our ratepayers and their families.
