SAWS Joins Mentoring Matters to the Mayor Program

San Antonio Water System today kicked off its participation in Mentoring Matters to the Mayor. Working with Communities in Schools of San Antonio, SAWS employees will serve as mentors to 20 students from E.T. Wrenn Middle School, part of the Edgewood Independent School District.

"SAWS employees often go above and beyond the call of duty to help the community, and what better way than to serve as mentors to middle school students," said Greg Flores, Vice President of Public Affairs for San Antonio Water System. "We hope to help guide these students through their educational careers, and help them decide what career is right for their future."

SAWS employees will serve as mentors for the students. Mentors and students met for the first time today, learning more about the program as well as participating in "ice breaker" activities to learn about each other. Future workshops will take place throughout the school year to help students explore career and educational opportunities with support from their SAWS mentor.

Mentoring Matters to the Mayor is a mentoring program designed to connect students to careers, guiding them from career exploration to college education. Middle school students are paired with adult professionals, with the hope that the "match" can continue through high school.
