Developments Since 2009
Adjustments to the 2009 Water Management Plan Update place San Antonio 20 years ahead of schedule in securing alternative supplies to meet the community's needs.
Since 2009, over $225 million has been invested in water resources and projects to help reduce our reliance on the Edwards Aquifer.
During the 2011 drought, pumping was shifted away from the Edwards and 40 million gallons per day were retrieved from our underground water storage facility, the second largest in the country.
By 2011, wells for the city's desalination plant were already being drilled in southern Bexar County, and water from the Carrizo Aquifer in Gonzales County will be piped to San Antonio starting in 2013.
Also, acquisition of additional Edwards Aquifer permits helps provide a firm foundation of our most affordable supply.
To keep rates affordable, SAWS is very cautious in choosing which water supply
projects to pursue.
