Aquifer Storage and Recovery

Planning Storage Capacity Increased

imageBy every measure, San Antonio's Aquifer Storage and Recovery facility has exceeded expectations and become a critical water management tool for the city and surrounding region. Originally planned to hold approximately 23,000 acre-feet in total, the facility now stores close to 100,000 acre-feet.

In 2011, stored supplies were recovered and distributed directly to SAWS customers to help mitigate the impacts of the driest year in recorded history, meeting up to 20 percent of daily demand. These supplies directly offset pumping from the Edwards Aquifer during the deepest part of a drought, benefitting the entire Edwards Aquifer Region.

While the 2009 Water Management Plan Update envisioned 50,000 acre-feet of stored supply, the plan has been changed to reflect 90,000 acre-feet of actual stored supply and a storage capacity of 120,000 acre-feet.

* An acre-foot of water is equivalent to 325,851 gallons
