Regional Agreement Saves SAWS $88 million in Capital Costs

In 2010, SAWS was awarded permits by the Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District to pump 11,688 acre-feet of water from the Carrizo Aquifer in Gonzales County.

By February 2011, SAWS had signed a regional partnership agreement with the Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation to rent transportation capacity in its existing pipeline, and to purchase surplus water supplies from the neighboring cities.

The partnership agreement provides up to an additional 5,500 acre-feet of annual water supply for San Antonio, and allows SAWS to save $88 million on the construction of a pipeline it no longer needs.

Originally proposed to reach south San Antonio at the SAWS Aquifer Storage and Recovery Facility, Carrizo Aquifer supplies will now be delivered earlier than expected to an existing SAWS pump station in northeast Bexar County.

The Regional Carrizo Water Supply Project is now scheduled in the Short-Range Program, delivering up to 17,200 acre-feet per year starting in 2013.
