Carrizo Aquifer: Regional Carrizo

Project to Help With Water Supply Diversification

Results reviewed in recent studies favor moving forward with the Regional Carrizo Project, which involves bringing groundwater from Gonzales and Wilson counties to San Antonio via a 59-mile pipeline.

Check the SourceProject Profile

The Regional Carrizo Project is located in Gonzales and Wilson counties, approximately 50 miles from San Antonio. The project includes delivery of water from western Gonzales County (up to 11,700 acre-feet* per year) in 2015.

Water produced from this well field would be transported by pipeline at rates up to 13 million gallons per day (mgd) to the existing Twin Oaks Aquifer Storage & Recovery facility in south Bexar County where water would be treated to drinking water standards and pumped into the SAWS distribution system.

Delivery of the water to local distribution points would be accomplished primarily via a new integration pipeline to the southwest and west portions of San Antonio. Various permits already in the approval process would be necessary to proceed with this project.

  • Project involves development of the Carrizo Aquifer in western Gonzales County.
  • SAWS has acquired water rights of approximately 21,700 AF/yr in western Gonzales County, northeast of Nixon.
  • Design of the infrastructure to transport the water to San Antonio is 90 to 95 percent complete.
  • Construction is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2015.

Project Benefits

  • The Regional Carrizo Project will assist in diversifying San Antonio’s water supply, reducing dependence on existing Edwards Aquifer supplies.
  • Project will provide water to meet San Antonio’s short-term water needs, beginning in 2015.
  • Project has the potential to provide pipeline easements for other water supply projects.

* An acre-foot of water is equivalent to 325,851 gallons
