What Does SAWS Bring to the Community?

“We were greatly concerned when SAWS announced they were coming into our community, and about the possible draw downs on our water wells. I was reluctant to believe they would provide the level of mitigation they were promising.

However, I was appreciative they recognized the draw down on my water wells and went to work almost immediately to examine and find a solution. This was true not only for my situation but also for their community approach. Despite tense discussion, they have been proactive, open, and most importantly, responsive in meeting with residents.

I truly believe this proactive mitigation approach has a lot to do with their new leadership team, and they have proven to me that their word is their commitment.”

“I have to be honest, residents in our community got off to a really bad start with SAWS. We were all terrified, and no one had a kind word to say about them. That is until it was time for SAWS to check my water well.

They thoroughly explained everything to make us a part of the entire process. The crews were great, and everything was resolved in a timely manner. Because we have had such negative experience, I kept waiting for something to go wrong, but it didn’t. They kept their word. They were extremely thorough. And, most importantly, we still have plenty of water.”

Mitigation Programs

  • More safeguards will be put in place to protect water levels, including seven new monitoring wells, in addition to the 11 that already exist.
  • A team solely dedicated to mitigation in Gonzales and Wilson counties has been created to quickly address any water level issues landowners may experience due to pumping.
  • We have a proven track record when it comes to helping landowners with their well levels and ensuring they always have access to water.

Conservation Programs

  • SAWS programs have been recognized as one of the best, if not the best, in the state and the nation. Many of our programs have been implemented by other cities across the country.
  • San Antonio now has the lowest per capita water use of any city in Texas.
  • San Antonio is doing all it possibly can to conserve water before it looks at other areas for water. Per capita use has been reduced over 100 gallons since 1980, and using recycled water for landscaping and industrial purposes has reduced potable water needs for the city by almost 10 billion gallons per year.
  • San Antonio is still working on reducing per capita water use, but with growth, we do need additional water.

Economic Development

  • New dollars to the area through lease payments
  • Additional fees paid to the Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District
  • Employment opportunities
  • Economic development funds to promote commercial development, job creation and investment in public infrastructure
