SAWS educational programs reach far beyond the walls of a traditional classroom.

H2O University
Although SAWS has committed resources to providing community education programs since May 1992, H2O University is a new initiative which began in January 2002. The innovative, education program unites all of our youth initiatives and aims to develop a water-literate citizenry. The following H2O University goals were accomplished in 2003:
Student Water Action Team (S.W.A.T.)
This program grew from 10 schools in 2002 to 17 schools in 2003, with nearly 400 high school students participating in SAWS field trips. SWATCON 2003, a new addition, showcased 270 students with environmental community service projects. SWATCON, with an attendance of more than 400, was a collaborative planning effort between 25 students and 24 teachers.
Second-Grade Curriculum Module
Several school districts, including Northside, Northeast, San Antonio, Judson and Southside, adopted The Adventures of Watershed Willie and Cactus Callie, Kindergarten –Second-Grade Curriculum Module. This includes about 16,000 Bexar County second-grade students and 600 teachers.
Watershed Festival
The popular Watershed Festival (for fifth-graders) was expanded to include 20 schools and 750 students in 2003. The 2004 Festival is slated for the Freeman Coliseum to accommodate even more participants.
H2O Heroes
Willie and Callie’s H2O Heroes debuted in October of 2002. So far about 1,600 children have registered and received a school supply “Heroes Kit.”
Children’s Museum Exhibit
Last February, the Board of Directors for the San Antonio Children’s Museum granted approval for the construction of a new SAWS exhibit. Based upon the H2O Heroes Clubhouse, the exhibit opens at the beginning of the summer.
Our Impact
The H2O University staff conducted over 100 school presentations last year, reaching more than 25,000 people. Plus, our programs served roughly 50,000 people in and around the Bexar County area.
