Pat Merritt joined the SAWS Board in 2013 and serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee.

A retired educator, Merritt spent nearly four decades in the education profession, first teaching in Gary, Indiana and Baltimore, Maryland. After 10 years, she returned to San Antonio to teach and work as a math and science curriculum coordinator for the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD).

Merritt attends Saint James AME Church in Prospect Hill where she finds herself in a familiar teaching role as superintendent of Sunday school. She serves on the San Antonio Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board at its East Side location and formerly served as a Girl Scout troop leader.

Merritt earned her bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State in Nashville and returned to Texas to obtain her master’s in administration and supervision from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville). She is a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Alliance of Black School Educators and Who’s Who Among American Teachers. Merritt has a daughter, grandchild and son-in-law.
