From Pipe Dream To Sewer Certainty

It literally took an act of Congress for the largest sewer replacement project in San Antonio history to finally get underway.

SAWS leaders were joined Aug. 7 by U.S. congressmen Henry Cuellar and Will Hurd, along with Mayor Ron Nirenberg and military officials, to break ground for the W-6 sewer main replacement project along U.S. Highway 90 to SW Military Drive near Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Cuellar and Hurd worked together to secure federal funding for the pipeline.

The much-needed infrastructure project, in the planning stages since 2007, will cost up to $210 million and serve more than 500,000 people.

The work involves five miles of tunneling more than 100 feet below ground to avoid disrupting traffic and military activity.

Construction is scheduled to begin mid-2020 and will take about three years.
