Routine testing of raw, untreated groundwater from a SAWS water well at 6912 West Ave detected the presence of E. coli bacteria. Raw water is water drawn directly from a well before treatment and disinfection. The affected well was immediately taken offline, and the untreated water never entered the drinking water distribution system serving customers.
All groundwater from SAWS wells undergo required treatment and disinfection before entering the drinking water system. Water provided to customers continues to meet all state and federal drinking water standards.
The well will remain out of service while SAWS investigates the potential source of the bacteria, inspects, and disinfects the well, and conducts additional testing to determine any necessary corrective actions before returning the well to service.
To help ensure the safety and reliability of the water supply, SAWS routinely tests water throughout its system, including both raw groundwater sources and treated drinking water.
In August, SAWS collected 452 finished water samples from our water system – none of which indicated the presence of E. coli.
Please note this is NOT a Boil Water notice. You do not need to take additional measures prior to consumption. Under the Groundwater Rule established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality long ago, SAWS is required to provide public notice if a water well tests positive for E. coli or fecal bacteria.
