You’d think your home water use would drop when you’re taking a well-earned vacation. But automated home systems — including irrigation, water softeners and pool refills — can waste a lot of water while you’re away.
The solution? Just turn ‘em off or put ‘em on “bypass.”
In-ground irrigation is by far the biggest culprit. A single cycle can use as much as your entire family does in a month. So avoid assigning the sprinkler controls to a neighbor while you’re out. Instead, just ask them to water by hand. Besides, early summer can be our wettest, most humid time of year, so there’s less evaporation.
Worried about leaks? Your SAWS ConnectH2O electronic meter can help, even when you’re traveling. Just log in at saws.org/myaccount and select the “Manage Accounts” option. Update your contact information to receive email or text alerts if there’s continuous water use while you’re away. (And even when you’re not!)
