Real-life rescue story told through the eyes of Pipa – a playful pup.
San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is launching a new children’s book, Pipa’s Big Adventure, inspired by the true story of a puppy rescued from a sewer line. Aimed at young, school-aged readers, the book takes kids inside the underground world of wastewater infrastructure — through the eyes of a curious pup named Pipa (Spanish for pipe).
In late 2023, SAWS televising crews rescued Pipa from a sewer pipe, a dramatic event that gained international media attention, including a feature by national digital publisher, The Dodo (www.thedodo.com). Now, Pipa’s story is helping teach a new generation about sewer safety and responsible disposal habits.
“We created Pipa’s Big Adventure to help kids understand what happens in our sewers — and why it’s so important to keep grease and wipes out of the pipes,” said Anne Hayden, SAWS Director of Communications. “Children are natural advocates. We hope Pipa’s story sticks with them and inspires conversations at home.”
The story features a happy ending and concludes with “Pipa’s Pledge” — a simple, kid-friendly commitment to keeping grease and wipes out of the drains. SAWS’ education team is already using the book during school visits and presentations.
