Mulch matters: The right way to mulch

Mulch plays a vital role in keeping your landscape healthy, particularly in the Texas heat.

A layer of 2-3 inches is best for most landscape beds to help keep soil cool, retain moisture and cut down on weeds. Thicker layers can suppress weeds more aggressively, but can also prevent rain from reaching plant roots.

Natural, un-dyed organic mulches like chipped hardwood or pine bark are best because they’re porous and help support soil health.

Just be sure to apply mulch several inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent moisture buildup and potential disease.
